I have also never experienced a problem with the 1R, but have never been a racer and don't generate racer torque on the bars. I also never used a 1R in my younger, more powerful days when I was still contesting those townline sprints with my riding buddies. I'd bet that is the difference. Fine for normal recreational riding, not so fine in a sprint.
I guess another possibility would be poor quality control with some (most) bar clamps being slightly oversized? Just hypothesizing.
