When the Cinelli 1R stem on my Ciocc started having trouble holding the bars, I didn't hesitate to trade it out for a 1A with a better grip. When I started restoring my Masi GC, the first thing to go was the 1R stem. Once you've owned an AVA or Pivo stem and been over the handle bars due to structural failure of the stem (and they all fail sooner or later) it doesn't take a rocket scientist to decide its time to think about what's safe. I lost more skin on that accident than all my others combined. Be safe!
