Hi George. Two other bikes you should keep an open mind to are the Trek 52 0 and the Schwinn Voyageur. Both of these machines would serve your friend s well. Two years ago I started commuting on a touring bike, and came to really love both the ride, and the functionality of the bike in the City . Best of luck in the new year.
