Dan,

I don't know, that wooden bike would probably keep a better flame than m ost of us. If it goes up in smoke let's make sure we have the weenies an d the marshmallows! All kidding aside, that wooden bike would make a nic e display at our show. Perhaps someday we might be able to talk about th e possibilities? That piece would have to be encased for protection, I s uspect.

Tickets for entry into the San Diego Custom Bicycle Show will be availab le at the door. We're not planning on selling tickets in advance. We are however getting new displays and exhibitors coming on board every day, like Cane Creek today. By show time we'll be full blown for a first year event. I'm working on some East of the Mississippi builders and even so me special guests from Italy as we speak. The Italians want a vacation a nd would like to check out the scene here. They are celebrities already; but I think they will be treated like Rock Stars here. Some of them hav e been seen at Interbike; but the general public almost never gets to me et them. In the Interbike atmosphere they only want to talk business and minimize contact to some degree. If they make it here they will be rela xing and having a good time. I'll see what can be accomplished under the circumstances. If you make the trip it will definitely be worth your ti me.

"The Long Ride"

by Bruce Friederich

Bruce Friedrich is a California artist who has worked in wood for over 26 years. Bruce is also an avid bicycle tourist. This work was inspired by a 3,500 mile bicycle trip Bruce made across the USA in 1996. The model for this sculpture is Mr. Friederich's own Specialized Allez SE road bike.

Built over a period exceeding nine hundred hours in 2000, the bicycle is

crafted entirely from wood. Most components function, and there are over

four hundred pieces in the working chain alone!

This artwork won First Place, the Creativity Award and Best of Show in the handcraft category at the 2000 California State Fair as well as numerous other awards.

Varieties of wood used include:

Tires = wenge

Chain, chain rings, rear cluster, derailleur cages, stem, fork crown, rims = aviation plywood

Frame = purpleheart and maple

Handlebars & shifters = Gabon ebony

Seat = Gabon ebony and maple

Spokes = 1/8" dowels

Cables = rattan caning

The pertinent fact above being the note about the model being an Allez SE, probably relatively new in 1996, and this replica being done in 2000. Thus, I have been describing something wildly off topic and will find myself righteously booted by our good Dale by morning, deservedly so.

Can't even claim it's KOF, because you wouldn't want flame anywhere near this thing. I am doomed.

Oh, hey, Brian -- the San Diego Custom Bike Show site doesn't have ticket sales up yet? It's a trip, sure, but I'm gonna try....
