Those two are quite similar, both having a deep cross-section to keep from splashing riders next to you. The Club Special has a ridge along the centre, while the Popular is plain round, but they both have a ridge on each side for stiffness. A third style is the Clubman, which looks just like the Club Special, but much shallower. This is the one that came standard on many lightweights, but club riders preferred the Club Special because of its deep cross-section.
