My recollection/experience is that they first came out in the very late 50's/early 60's and were all steel and had a pinned metal badge; then in mid/late 70's they had a steel post but aluminum head (still with pinned metal badge); then in early 80's had an aluminum post and aluminum head (still with a pinned metal badge); then finally in mid 80's they had an aluminum post and head but changed to a foil decal in place of the metal badge. Since these posts were generally spec'd on French bikes, the Peugeot PX-10E in particular, you see 26.4/26.6/26.8 most frequently but I've seen all versions in 27.2.
