Re: [CR] Changes for 2009 L'Eroica event

(Example: Events:Cirque du Cyclisme:2002)

Just wanted to add a real quick and dirty translation that will be rife with errors but will, I hope, at least convey the gist:

Afters years in which L'Eroica experienced constant growth in visibility, prestige and number of participants while remaining true to itself, the next edition will be marked by change. The numbers are becoming a burden on our organizing group, consisting of friends and hobbyists. As a result we are forced to alter our approach to the event. The latest edition, as you know, surpassed by a good measure the threshhold of 3,000 enrolled particticipants, a number which may necessitate a profound change in something all have viewed as something with its own special and unique charm.

We, who have never had business interests at heart, want to continue to enjoy ourselves with L'Eroica and its cast of characters, people of rare humanity and deep values. After much discussion among our group and many participants who have become like family to us, it has become clear that the time is ripe for the next edition to admit only those bicycles "eroiche", a distinction heretofore only informally defined, will be more tightly specified. Only "eroici", a distinction that will naturally downsize the event but that will, we believe, distinguish it to even a greater degree it's uniqueness to the world. Unique as the strade bianche on which the event is run, that we seek to safeguard with the full cooperation of local institutions.

We are of course aware that not all have a suitable bicycle, and others lack the legs and abilities to be able to participate with historic equipment. For these reasons we have decided to take a fresh look at other possibilities, other to continue the event into the future.

In fact, on June 28, 2009, the cyclotourist event "Chianti Classic" will be held on those mythical 205 km (112 on strada bianca) of distance. Long and open to every type of bicycles, including MTBs, the shortest three distances will remain identical to previous editions (55, 86 and 130 km)entirely on asphalt, while those taking the full course will ride on the Eroica roads (with the 130 km possibly having an all-asphalt option).

Then visit our site to find suggestions for doing the Eroica in 2, 3 or more days. It will be, as ever, a grand occaision to bicycle tour in the rare beauty and to rediscover the authentic roots (and pains) of a great sport.
