Subject: [CR] Vintage Wheels for Sale

Dear Fellow CR Listmates:

I am selling a few wheelsets for my buddy Hans that we found in the attics of his home and shop in Huntsville. The proceeds of this sale will go directly or indirectly to the Rita B. Huff Humane Society (if not directly, then to the Memorial Park Criterium Series http://hscycles.com/ , the proceeds from which go to benefit the Rita B. Huff Humane Society).

I have tried my best to describe the wheels in this email. All of the wheels are 700c and are perfectly useable in their present condition. I will gladly take pictures of the wheels and email them to you if you actually have interest in buying one or more of them (please, no vintage bike schwag e-window shoppers.I've got work to do ya know). Shipping should be $15.00 via UPS ground for one wheel and like $25.00-30.00 for a pair. Here's the list:

(1) Pair of low-flange 36h Campagnolo Nuovo Record hubs (no skewers) laced 3x with butted steel spokes (unknown brand) and alloy nipples (unknown brand) to grey anodized Mavic GEL 280 tubular rims. These wheels are round and true. The bearings should be re-packed but the wheels spin great. The rim beds have been lightly brushed to remove some dried-up glue residue, but I would clean them up some more if I were you before gluing tires to the wheels. The side walls have nearly all of their anodizing except just above and centered over the nipples, where the brake pads rubbed at some point. None of the 72 eyelets on these wheels are cracked. The rear hub is BSC/English threaded. All things considered, I would give these wheels a 7/10 or an 8/10 if you accept sidewall blemishes on 80s-era Mavic grey anodized rims a par for the course. Asking $100.00 plus actual shipping for this wheelset.

(2) One rear 32h FT brand BSC/English threaded hub (no skewer) laced 3x with butted steel spokes (unknown brand) and steel nipples (unknown brand) to a grey anodized 28h Martano "Professional" tubular rim. The spokes were tied and soldered as was the fashion in the day. This wheel feels pretty hefty, but it is round and true and it's in very good mechanical condition (8/10) and cosmetic condition (7/10). If you were so inclined you could polish the hub to make it look new. The bearings should be re-packed. The rim bed need to be cleaned. There are no cracks around the eyelets. There are three Martano decals on the rim: (1) a yellow, bowtie-shaped decal - in nearly perfect condition - with "Martano" written across it in blue - the bowtie overlays a globe with world champion stripes; (2) a silver decal - in nearly perfect condition - with the word "PROFESSIONAL" in black; and (3) a blue decal over the valve hole that's worn off to the point that it's hard to read "Martano" and "MADE IN ITALY" on the face of it. According to CR Listmate Greg with Bicycle Classics (thanks for the input, Greg), FT ("Fratelli Txxxxx" a/k/a "Txxxxx Brothers") was located in Bologna, Italy, and made hubs for Campagnolo from the 1940s until 1958 when Campagnolo introduced its self-designed and manufactured one-piece aluminum-bodied Record hub. Anyway, this FT hub doesn't have a grease port, and looks to me a little like a Mavic 501 series rear hub. Asking $50.00 plus actual shipping for this wheel.

(3) One rear 36h high flanged Campagnolo Nuovo Record hub (with skewer) that's laced 3x with straight gauge steel spokes (unknown brand) and steel nipples (unknown brand) to a silver FIAMME tubular rim (I don't know what model.sorry). These wheels are round and true. The bearings should be re-packed but the wheels spin great. The rim beds need to be cleaned. The rim and hub would look great with some polishing. Asking $75.00 plus actual shipping for this wheel.

(4) One front 32h low flanged Campagnolo hub (model is unknown, but it's 80s vintage and doesn't have a grease port) that's laced with straight gauge steel spokes (unknown brand) and steel nipples (unknown brand) to a silver Mavic Monthlery tubular rim with intact Mavic decal and a (probably unwanted) Chiquita banana sticker in very good condition ;-) This wheel feel is round and true. If you were so inclined you could polish the hub to make it look new. The bearings should be re-packed. The rim bed needs to be cleaned. There are no cracks around the eyelets. I would rate this wheel's condition as 8/10 mechanically and 6/10 cosmetically. Asking $25.00 plus actual shipping for this wheel.

(5) One front 32h Suntour Cyclone (with skewer) laced 3x with butted steel spokes (unknown brand) and alloy nipples (unknown brand) to a silver Mavic MA box-sectioned CLINCHER rim. This wheel is round (no flat spots) but needs a little truing. This wheel is an 8/10 cosmetically and will be a 10/10 mechanically once trued a little. These wheels have been in storage for 15-20 years, so I would re-pack the bearings. Asking $25.00 plus actual shipping for this wheel.

(6) One rear 36h high flanged Campagnolo Nuovo Record hub (with Regina G.S. Course 5 spd. freewheel but no skewer) laced 3x with straight gauge steel spokes (unknown brand) and steel nipples (unknown brand) to a silver AVA tubular rim. This wheel spins very nicely in the stand, and could be made perfectly round and true with just a little effort. I would re-pack the bearings. The freewheel is in pretty good shape, but might be stuck to the thread (I checked once but don't recall; if it is, it can probably be removed with the usual tricks (I doubt the threads are damaged.it's just that the wheel has been in an attic for 25-30 years). This freewheel is dirty and has plenty of patina, but isn't worn out from use. There are two decals on the rim: (1) a blue-bordered decal with a silver center with "AVA" written in blue (the decal is peeling at the top-center and has an upward crease in the middle); and (2) a red decal with a black-lined border (over the valve hole) with "MADE IN FRANCE" in black on the top and "BREVETTE S.G.D.G." in black on the bottom (this decal is intact and in good condition). You probably don't need to clean the rim bed. This wheel is fair condition 5-6/10 mechanically and cosmetically, and will make an excellent spare wheel as is - especially if you are running a 5 spd. freewheel. Asking $20.00 plus actual shipping for this wheel.

(7) One rear 36h low-flanged Campagnolo Nuovo Record hub (with Regina G.S. Course 5 spd. freewheel but no skewer) laced 3x with straight gauge steel spokes (unknown brand) and steel nipples (unknown brand) to a silver Mavic Monthlery tubular rim. This wheel spins very nicely in the stand, and could be made perfectly round and true with just a little effort. I would re-pack the bearings. The freewheel is stuck to the threads, but can probably be removed with the usual tricks (I doubt the threads are damaged.it's just that the wheel has been in an attic for 25-30 years).

This rounds up the list. Feel free to call or email me with your questions (as long as you aren't a vintage bike schwag e-window shopper).
