In adapting a modern shoe with velcro strap closures for use with slotted cleats, it is best to have a cobbler remove the straps and install eyelets for lacing. This will give much better entry (and exit) without them interfering with the outward portion of the strap and buckle. I've had this done with a pair of Diadora Voyagers and it works great.

As was previously suggested by someone the last time this thread arose, you could pick a set of dress shoes and, if the leather sole isn't really stiff, have the cobbler add a layer of heavy leather. After riding them a bit to get the cage imprints, have the same cobbler make a set of Specialites TA mod. 40 leather touring cleat knockoffs and clinch (clench) nail them to the soles approx. 1/8 - 1/4 inch forward of, and parallel to, the rear cage mark. Very practical for use where one needs to walk in the shoes without clip clopping around.

Ken,Another option worth exploring:If you have modern/off-topic/clipless shoes that you have been using, there are a couple of companies (Yellow J ersey in Madison, Wisconsin comes to mind) which make a traditional slott ed cleat that mounts onto a standard LOOK style (3-bolt) pattern. This wil l enable you to use modern cycling shoes with a platform/clips/strap pedal set-up. Matthew BowneBrooklyn, New York
