If it were my grand father's work, I'd want to preserve his handiwork! All my grandparents are gone, i wish I had something handmade from each of them! I doubt you guys have the means or equipment to have him repaint it, and who knows, he might keel over from the fumes during any attempted repaint ??
I'd clean up the components, maybe rechrome some things (call the best harley davidson dealer and get a recommendation for a chromer, and make sure to tell the chromer to preserve the logos), and ride it as-is (new tires and rubber and cabling, of course ...)
