Hi Damian,

Early Italvegas had four-digit serial numbers stamped underneath the bottom bracket shell, and these numbers are thought to be unit numbers, either for the entire line, or of specific models ... that is yet to be determined. So the bike is believed to be the 6081st made. The largest of these numbers I've seen is in the 8000s. I believe that sometime in 1972, serial numbers changed to six-digit codes, flanked by five-point star shapes. The stars, as stamped along with the numbers at the Torpado factory in Padova, Italy that made them, probably simply represent Italvega, which means "Star of Italy" or perhaps "Italian Star".

I believe then, that your bike was built sometime around the latter half of 1971, and as someone mentioned in response to your inquiry at Bike Forums, many of the components are not original. You can view some other Italvega models and parts specs, but the Gran Rally was no longer offered by the time of this scanned c.1976 Italvega catalog at Mark Bulgier's website:

I have photos and descriptions of several Gran Rally examples, and can probably pull a pretty good parts list from them, if needed. For example, many G.R.'s came appropriately equipped with Campagnolo Rally rear derailleurs, but not all of them. Thanks for the data points and pics for my files!
