Hex socket fasteners aka "Allen bolts" go back at least to the 1920s,
probably further. As far as I can determine Unbrako were the first to
manufacture them and still in fact do. I'd be surprised if they
hadn't found their way onto bicycles within a few years of becoming
commercially available.
