Jim,

I haven't tried it, but I'm pretty certain it will not work. The smaller ba ll diameter/same cup wall thickness combo requires a wider center section o n the spindle of the titanium axles to keep chainline equal. For example, a 68-SS-120 SR titanium axle has a 52mm center section. The same designation NR steel axle has a 49.5mm center section. If you sub the steel axle for t he ti, your chainline will move outboard (by about 2.5mm,) and your adjusta ble cup will probably disappear into the shell.

In any case, it's a bad idea to use an axle ground for bigger bearings with smaller ones. The bearings will ride differently on the race, probably dam aging it.

I searched on the archives to no avail so..

I have a couple of Super Record alloy with steel races bottom bracket cup sets with no axles. I know these take smaller ball bearings, 3/16s I believe. Can I substitute a Campy steel axle (e.g., 68-SS-120 etc) and have it work ok?

I know I can just put one together and measure it but if someone already knows what will (or won't) work that would save me some time.
