Yes, it's a classic, but it's really only funny if you've been there and found a way around it, and it's not useful to someone like Guy the OP.
I've probably read most of what's in the archives, but I keep coming back to the Zinn instructions in the VeloPress book "Zinn's Cycling Primer," and the instructions printed inside the cardboard sleeve that Vittoria tires are often shipped in. The procedures are similar 4-part (clean rim, put glue on rim, put glue on tire, put more glue on one of them, mount tire), but the Vittoria takes about 45 minutes rather than 2 days. Neither procedure results in a big glue mess if you're careful. Zinn gives you explicit techniques for cleanliness.
There are many other bits of advice on other forums as well, but I think these two are the best for beginners and those of us needing a good refresher course.
