Velcro (velours crochet) has a noble story and a storied past. It was invented in 1941, patented in Switzerland in 1955 and all over Europe in 1957. So there is no doubt it is On Topic. And if the pro racers didn't use it back then ... well, they didn't much like aluminum, either. So Dan, I say go with Velcro brand hook-and-loop fasteners.
