You are correct to point out how horrible those Simplex DT shifters were. Another thing we learned fast was Suntour derailleurs required a lot of cable pull. So if we were upgrading a rear derailleur for a bike with Euro levers we always went with a Shimano unit. This was really critical with bikes with ''Stem Shifters'' (wonder how many times those have been mentioned on CR?) which were limited to about 90o of movement
