Quill Pedals...

Wouldn't the outer quill cage protect the dust cover, leather strap and shoe when you skidded out at speed and slid down the course pavement? I've seen many pedals which were pretty chewed up or bent on that outer tip, with clear evidence of a fall.

Wide shoes...

My favorite pedals remain the Lyotard 460-D (similar to the modern MKS Sylvan Touring). Because a raised tab at the crank side of the cage plate discourages a sliding shoe from gouging crank arms, I give it points over the MKS.

Same with the Lyotard #23 Berthet model - my other top choice. A small tab is located at the inner edge of the platform, and my wider shoes can just extend outward rather than kicking against the crank arm.
