I hope this gets to you. We're in the Sierras with poor reception. Wooljersey's server's disk failed two weekends ago. It's at a co-location facility in OH, I'm in CA. They tried swapping circuit boards with one from an identical drive but no luck, which probably means worse damage. I had no off-site backups. I am a fool for that. Wooljersey was just shy of 50gb. Another community I served with mailing lists and list archives dating back to 1996 is also bereft. And my wife and I lost family photos and I lost important text. Our family domain was on there.

I researched data recovery companies. There are cheaper ones out there, but some just do more damage trying to spin disks that have already seen the damage of heads on platters, metal-to-metal contact. All roads lead to Drivesavers in Novato, CA. They have been doing this since the 1980s, and they are the best. I had it sent there. They received it Monday 7/29. I signed up for the most economical solution, which will cost somewhere above $1500. If they are successful and get some or all of the data I will have Wooljersey back up soon.

I posted about this on CR a couple days ago. I feel guilty for asking for help, but aside from some google ads, the site cost me $100/month, and this recovery is coming straight out of my wallet. So if you want to pitch in, you can paypal me at morgan@hahaha.org. So far I've gotten about $250 in donations plus a listmember is giving me a good deal on some period parts that's worth some money too. Thanks, everyone.

Assuming things go well and I can resurrect WJ, I will institute internet-based off-site backups! I will also try to move wj to a new home, maybe with a new admin or some new admin help. I'd also like to offer some new stuff to the community, beyond just pictures.

Typed all this with a blackberry!

I have not been able to get on Wooljersey for several days. Has anyone else had the same problem? Can't find Morgan's e-mail.
