Jack,

I suspect you mean 1971 (Merckx rode for Faemino in 1970). I was just looking at my "Merckx Special" Cycle Sport (Jan. 2005) today after this topic came up. On page 125 is a photo of Merckx on what is almost certainly a Colnago frame, with the text indicating that the photo is from '71. The bike has the hole in the lower seatlug tang and the two in the fork crown. There is a clamp-on bottle cage on the downtube. In that same section regarding Merckx's 1971 season are a picture purportedly from Paris Roubiax and one from the Puy de Dome stage of the Tour, both of which show Merckx on bikes with clamp-on cages on the downtube and no cage on the seattube. Of course, not all of Merckx's bikes were necessarily Colnagos that year. It's quite a bit? harder to see the frame details in these second two photos, but they look like they might well have the extra holes in the crown and seatlug and one appears to show a panto stem. I'm a little less confident calling these Colnagos than the pic on p. 125, especially given Kessels' apparent ability to mimic other builders (the possible club in the front of the stem would be convincing if the photo was only a bit larger). Interestingly, the bikes all appear to have braze-on rather than clamp-on bottom bracket cable guides - this is more evident in the pics from Roubaix and Puy de Dome.

Ed Granger Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ "The best photo I have is a Molteni Merckx.? The frame is from 1970.? Also if you look closely at Eddy's Molteni bikes he had bottle bosses (down tube)?on just about every frame and he used clamps to attach a second one on the seat tube.

?

Now that wooljersey is down (sorry Morgan) I guess we will have start putting together our own photo files.? I'd better get to work.
