Subject: [CR] Let Your Fingers Do The Walking Through The Velo-Pages

The (...hopefully) temporary absence of WoolJersey is most unfortunate, and it is my sincere hope that Morgan will be able to once again make this invaluable resource available to fellow vintage cycling enthusiasts - whether it be recovered to its previous state or reformulated from scratch.

Inasmuch as I was privy to the extent of the problem a bit sooner than some others, I came to a conclusion early on that it would likely prove prudent to seek an alternate means of hosting the various vintage cycling catalogs, brochures, magazine articles, and such that I had previously posted to WoolJersey (...some, with the acknowledged and much appreciated help of others). To that end, I went about securing a new domain name, dedicated server space, and the requisite Gallery software to reconstitute a portion of that which had previously been available through WoolJersey (...and yes, it is being backed up "off site" each and every night). At this point in time, said content has been dutifully categorized, uploaded, annotated, and is now available for public perusal using the following link:

http://www.Velo-Pages.com http://www.velo-pages.com/

After you have accessed the site using the link provided above, click on any of the appropriate sub-albums. Navigation from that point should pretty much be a familiar straight forward "point and click" operation. As before, this library of vintage cycling material has been grouped into four distinct categories or albums, and these may be described as follows:

"Catalogs / Brochures / Posters / Decals / Ephemera" - this high level album serves as the digital home to a collection of various vintage cycling related materials, primarily catalogs and brochures, all grouped into manufacturer specific sub-albums. The focus here would be component and/or accessories manufacturers and within each of the manufacturer sub-albums, pertinent material is presented in chronological order. Generally speaking, you will find catalogs, brochures, and technical manuals, but I have also included the occasional tech article as well as some advertising copy in select instances (...and there is LOTS more to come sometime after our move back out to the West Coast).

"Maintenance / Repair / Miscellaneous Technical Information" - this album primarily contains technically oriented articles either detailing with the "how to" of proper maintenance or providing descriptive specifics pertinent to vintage components available at the time of publication. This time around, I have also seen fit to include manufacturer specific articles (...Campagnolo, Simplex, Zeus, etc.) which may similarly be found within those albums dedicated to the manufacturer in question. As before, I have included copies of the Sutherland's Handbook For Bicycle Mechanics, volumes 1, 2, and 3 (...although these are password protected at this time because I still do not yet have the express written consent of the legitimate copyright holder for their republication on the internet under terms of the Fair Use Doctrine).

"Road Tests / Reviews" - as the title implies, this album chronicles those bicycle road tests and reviews published over the years as well as interviews and articles specific to frame builders / manufacturers. Said articles are posted chronologically by date of their original publication and without regard to manufacturer.

"Trade Shows / Expos" - this album contains published reports from the likes of the Paris, Milan, and New York City bicycle shows. My primary reason for including these accounts is that they serve as an excellent guide to determine exactly when particular items were introduced to the public inasmuch as most of these shows were used to debut new components and ideas.

I would like to underscore the fact that any and everyone is more than welcome to link to the articles and information posted to Velo-Pages and/or even replicate same for personal use. HOWEVER, wanton plagiarism and/or republication of same without the express written permission of the copyright holder is not likely to be looked upon favorably by the fine folks at Rodale Press and may lead to a revocation of our current agreement for internet republication under the terms of the "fair use" doctrine and even quite possibly prompt legal action on their part. So, while all of this wonderful information may well "want to be free", as a particular CR List member once quite publicly opined, please use common sense and discretion with respect to this resource or otherwise needlessly risk its complete and total loss to the vintage cycling community as a whole.

Coincident to birth of the new Velo-Pages, it may well be worth noting that I took the opportunity to complete the process of digitizing and uploading ALL of that material I physically have on hand which once appeared in the pages of Bicycling and Bike World magazines as published from 1970 through 1980 inclusive - and this represents the addition of quite a few more resources than were previously available on WoolJersey. Despite missing a precious few issues (...specifically, Bicycling / 1973 JAN, Bike World / 1972 APR, and Bike World / 1972 OCT - and anyone who might be willing to allow me to borrow a copy of these magazines so that I might digitize the contents and thereafter promptly return it, is STRONGLY encouraged to please contact me directly and "OFF LIST"), I believe that the timing is now appropriate for me to include a full accounting of the various articles which are currently available online through Velo-Pages. While the following compilation may well be considered a bit lengthy with respect to those posts normally associated with this particular forum, I have rarely been accused of being terse. More importantly, by virtue of the fact that the following virtual compendium may subsequently be accessed via the CR List archive function, it means that this can hereafter be used as a "searchable index" - something which can easily be imported into anyone's email or word processing program and examined accordingly. For example, one might at some future date recall this text and perform a search for the term "Motobecane" or "SunTour" or perhaps even "chain" to easily identify those articles germane to their particular interests or needs.
