Sutherlands is a handbook for bicycle mechanics. I was given a copy by my employer back when I worked as a mechanic for Suncrest back in my college days. (Yes, I actually worked for Suncrest in the mid-1970s selling and repairing truly awful department store quality bikes - but at least I rode a Gitane "Tour de France" at the time.)

I am restoring a 1972 PX-10 and have just started on the original wheels (normandy Lux Competition hubs). Turns out the rear axle is bent. I see this substance is being discussed to clean off rust and other crud off metal. I want to offer this cautionary tale. About 30 years ago I was using it to clean a pair of 18th Century andirons. I was in the corner of a basement. Feeling that the fumes were getting pretty strong I got up top go outside and take a break. When I stood, the whole place spun and I just dropped to my knees. I realized right away (One might not) what the problem was and crawled away on my hands and knees to the basement stairs and beat a hasty retreat to fresh air.
When using just about anything that is strong, be sure you have both ventilation and probably a mask, too. Safety glasses and gloves are a must with anything of this ilk. Lots of legal stuff (from chrome polish, to oven cleaners) can be dangerous under the right circumstances. Be very careful.

Sutherland's says French hollow rear axles were M9.5 x 1, which is very close to 26 TPI. There are still new rear axles available for M9.5 x 26 TPI for mid-priced Japanese hubs, so if the Normandy Competition were the standard French 9.5 x 1, then I think a 9.5 x 26 TPI is worth a try, although you will probably have to cut it as new axles are likely to be too long. If this doesn't work you may need to find a classic axle. The mid-priced Normandy Sport used different dimension cones, but I think maybe the axle itself had the same dimensions as Normandy Competition, so an inexpensive Normandy rear hub might be a suitable donor.
