George,

Steve and Don pretty much described what Sutherland's is. The full title is "Sutherland's Handbook For Bicycle Mechanics." The first edition was copyrighted in 1974. The current 7th edition covers from 1996 to 2004.

No decent bike shop was without a copy. You could look up ball bearing size and count for bottom brackets, headsets and hubs plus there were specs for most of the repairable components of the day.

Another feature was a spoke length calculator. It was complicated to use but better than most other sources available at that time.

I have the 5th edition copyrighted 1990 and they still offer the 6th edition on a CD which covers from 1970 through 1996.

Jerry Moos makes reference to "Sutherland's". What is it?
