I think respectively, the answers are no and yes, absolutely. The 80s hubs have the date codes on the OUT side of the nuts, but that is still invisible when installed ... and even hard to see when you are looking for it! Swap the q/r skewers, and no one will know the difference without checking the nuts, assuming the spokes, nipples and rims are period correct.

Gang, Aside from a flat (versus curved) quick-release skewer and the dates stamped on the inside of the axle locknuts, are there any noticeable differences between an early 70's low-flange Record hubset and the later (say, early-mid 80's) low-flange version? Could said 80's hubs when used in tandem with flat skewers pass for "correct" on an early 70's bike?
