Subject: [CR] What is the Real Meaning of Frejus?

Many people on the CR list and Frejus fans have often wondered what is the origin of the name Frejus? How did these bikes get this name? Well, here it goes:Frejus bikes were originally built by the Ghelfi brothers in Torino, Italy at the beginning of the 20th century. The word Frejus is shortened from the Latin, the Forum of Julius, a reference to Julius Caesar who may have had an encampment or his legions in that region. There a Frejus statue in the Piazza delle Statuto in Torino dedicated to the workers who died building the Frejus tunnel which connects France to Italy. The Ghelfi brothers named their bikes after this monument which is quite majestic and classical in appearance and was near their shop. It has nothing to do with with the city of Frejus on the Cote D'Azur in France. It is also not a French bike as many people believe. This information was given to me by members of the Bozzi family when I bought my Frejus in the Frejus/ Legnano shop in Milan for the whopping price of $240.00 in 1972. I still have the bike,my original sales receipt, and a Emilio Bozzi business card with the familiar logos of Frejus and Legnano above the Bozzi name.
