Subject: [CR] Finishing touches to a 1982 Rossi - re Vol 80, Issue 104

Replying to Marks questions Vol 80, Issue 104;

Hanging a working bike in a museum is, in my opinion, just wrong unless it is famous bike like Saronni's actual '83 Colnago. What do I plan to do with it once it's done? Race it! Take it to Italy and ride to the store, basically get out and enjoy it.

Last year with the bike 90% completely restored to original (but fully functioning and safe) I showed up a regional crit race; 60 min plus 5 laps (2km / lap). The course was very fast, long sweeping corners with no need to stop peddling. I showed up on the line in complete 80's attire, leather and wood shoes, wool jersey, Lovell shorts, cotton a leather gloves - had to use a regulation helmet but it was black. The other racers were thrilled to see the museum piece on the line (not sure if they were referring to me or the bike). All I have to say is the new indexed shifting systems allow rides to select a gear without risking under/over shifts and in the pack at 50km/hr having both hands on the bars is a big plus. Back of the pack finish.

In the winters though I do spin vinyl on a vintage turntable, blasting my collection of vinyl through a Pioneer SX 850 paired with Acoustic Research 4 ways (which I am refoaming as I write) - oh on rollers of course. The whole house thumps.

Luckily many Toronto record stores sell new vinyl and cartridges - yes I love breaking in a new record with a new needle; last week it was a NOS The Waterboys.

Let's face it when I'm on my old bike, it's not simply a bike, it's time machine. Look for a photo of the bike at http://www.ciclirossi.it soon.
