I always thought the acendancy of vertical dropouts was because of the advent of index shifting which requires a fixed and precise wheel placement. Horizontal droputs are more versitile in terms of gearing and drivetrain options, more in tune with what I take was the prevailing attitude of having one bike being able to do all things.
