I don't recall that problem "back in the day", but the pair of NOS ones I have here are also like that. The rear one appears to be slightly indented on both sides where it has to fit between the chainstays, but not nearly enough. When the time comes to mount these, I will just grind the sides away on each side of the clip. Another option would be to use a heat gun and deepen the indentations, but I'd be afraid to overheat the plastic and distort it.

Yes, there were narrower ones than the Club Special. The Clubman and Popular models come to mind. However, these were more flimsy and afforded less spray protection to the rider next to you. For this reason the Club Special was the choice of most club riders.
