Yikes. I'm not yet 50 and I remember doing the sandpaper/flame thing for a bike tube as a teen. The bike shop I first worked at would not patch but insisted on selling a new tube.

I used to carry an extra tube and a patch kit. Now I just carry an extra tube and a patch kit. Some things never change.
