Folks, I distinctly remember there being an "over sized French tandem" headset... Seems like it was made by & named after the maker, Bardon. In fact, at one time I had a couple for sale here at cycles de ORO (like 10-20 years ago) as if tandems rolled up needing new headsets

And, IIRC, Fred DeLong makes mention of these in his book... And I thought they was only available in a metric version, but who knows, maybe the Taylor bros were able to have them made for their bikes. And they were definitely not MTB 1 1/8" and predated those by 20-30 years...

I'd like to clarify that I "believe" that was the case. MPI has some Specialized 1-1/8" headsets, which Mel indicated were for tandem forks. I don't have a lot of experience with tandems, but 1-1/8 was common on mountain bikes (before they all went threadless), and likely appropriated from tandem design. Also, Sutherland's indicates that older British tandems used 1-1/8, so I base my belief on that. Besides, MPI never carried much in MTB parts, so a tandem application for these Specialized headsets makes sense to me.

Campy even made a 1-1/4" threaded headset, but not for this crowd.
