Hello List.
I have a vintage French Porteur rack that needs to find a new home. My guess is that it's 1960's, but that is purely a guess. Chromed 1/2" tubular steel, approx weight is about 6lbs, and rack surface measures 14.5x18!
From a quick faux mount- it looks like it was made for 27"/700c but with some finagling of the brake mount, you could probably make it work with 650, it will just be a bit higher. Did I mention it has a nifty little light mount?
Rack mounts to fork crown via brake hole and then directly to hub axle, so it should be able to take a considerable amount of weight.
The condition is great for it's age, but there are two things that need pointing out. There is a small notch in on the top tang. I don't think it's a crack, as there was a light mounted to it and the cable was stuffed in there. There is also a small hole that was drilled for the light. The tange itself looks as it has been bent a couple times to suit different bicycles, but seems pretty solid still. My plan for it was to have Bernie Mikkelsen braze a new mount on, but this one is still quite usable.
There is also some scraping to the sides of the rack from leaning against walls, etc. Some minor surface rust on one of the bars as well, and surface rust and flaking to the tang. This was definitely from a work bike. Overall, I would say the chrome is a 8.5/10. The rest is straight and in great shape.
