I would shorten that axle with a hacksaw and then clean the end up with a file . threading an old cone down first would make sense and also would give you a flat surface to cut against. And maybe just to start a discussion thread, What would be primary equipment for our home repair shops? Vise?Grinder? Would there be enough flexibility to make it worth while to have a drill press? Often we have questions about how to do stuff and I doubt there are many home Milling Machines or Lathes among us.Some of us might be lucky enough to have these kinds of items at work or available to borrow.
