Todd,

Did you unscrew the inner part of the tool far enough (but not all the way) first?

As I recall (and I do not have a puller in front of me), the outer portion of the crank puller can only screw into the crank arm threads when the inner (puller) portion of the tool is almost completely loosened (unscrewed from it, but not removed entirely).

Once the crank puller threads are fully seated in the crank arm threads, the loosened inner portion is screwed in/tightened, which "pulls" the crank arm off of the axle.

I've forgotten to unscrew the puller from itself many times on several brands of cranks and pullers, so i think my memory is correct... :-)
