Subject: [CR]RE: eBay Outing - 1963 Schwinn Superior

I agree with Jerry that the recent sale was a bargain. Perhaps a new seller with zero feedback, or the economy, or season contributed to lackluster bi dding. While I have seen quite a few '62 Superiors, this is only the second '63 I have seen in some time. I have owned the other since it was new.

The one on eBay appeared to be original except for the brake levers, bar ta pe, added rack and kickstand and butchered saddle. The rear derailleur also may have been a replacement, but it was still an early Huret Alvitt. The p aint/decals on the eBay bike appeared to be in very good to excellent condi tion.

I believe that these bikes were very good for their time. However, I always wished Schwinn had put a BSC bottom bracket and three-piece crank on this frame. The frame on this model was straight gauge Chrome Moly with chromed fork and stays and a chrome band on the seat-tube, and lacks the brazed-on kickstand that was featured on other Schwinn midweights and later Super Spo rts. Perhaps the entire frame is chrome as Jerry's '62 exhibits. Originally equipped the bike weighed about 30 lbs.

Shortly after acquiring my Superior, I replaced the Weinmann clincher rims and tires with sew-ups. My bike so equipped weighs about 28 lbs. I rode thi s bike extensively in the '60's including a trip from San Francisco to Los Angeles and on numerous ascents of Mts. Hamilton, Diablo and Tamalpias in t he Bay Area where I grew up.

Here's a picture of my '63 Superior:
