The "M" in the BB shell is the standard Masi shape (not cut or cast... it was done with a punch press). The window in the downtube socket is unusual tho... most Carlsbads had an oval window rather than the triangle on this one.
IMO, this frame screams "employee bike." Quirky details are improbable for a show bike or custom order and that seat lug extension is poorly done. Also, it uses the old lugset (in the #0700's they would have been well into the investment lug period), so I'm guessing it was put together by an employee in his spare time from parts that were lying around (I've heard from several sources that each Carlsbad employee was allowed to pick or build a frame for himself).
