The first guy was my Dad. He had an intuitive mind about mechanical things and loved watching his son figure things out. I give the title "coaster brake" to people who have been around along time and can figure things out. Bob Renninger at Indiana Schwinn in Indiana Pa was the first guy I ever gave the title too.

Great topic! Here on Bainbridge Island we have TWO top class wrenches, former National Team Mechanic Paul Johnson, and former Euro Pro and National Team member Gavin O'Grady. These two guys are probably tired of talking to me - they give freely of their advice but I believe that for best results, the rider should do most of his / her own wrenching. NOBODY can do better work on a bike than the person who rides it!

I have on occaision asked them to solve a problem that stumped me - like tweek an (off topic) Record 10 QS front derailleur setup so it shifts perfectly - but the care and attention to detail counts for a lot, and that is not something that shops are able to do.

Same thing goes for working on your vintage car!
