William O, I see that you live in NY. I live in So. Cal. When I lived in Northern Cal. there was a word that had popular usage but that I don't hear in So. Cal. The word is "soul". I missĀ not the word, but the meaning and feeling behind it. I think you are talking about soul when you say you'd like to patronize people who make the stuff and understand how it will be used.

Being in the bicycle business, I'd like to know how the musical instrument world has built the concept that an instrument with a history or "soul" is more valuable than a brand new one that is made just as well.

I wish I could say that when I ride a bicycle it is like beautiful music, but I fear I am just clumsily practicing scales and somewhat out of tune metaphorically speaking. I stillĀ appreciate a fine instrument.

Hi CR crew..

Goodonya goes out to Jerry Moos for all the fantastic leads for Vintage cycling wear.. in response to a query posted by yours truly a few days back.. I actually searched around and thought http://www.earthwindandrider.com has some excellent wool pullovers.. . not too unreasonably priced.. and Merino wool.. Hope they will make a full zip soon.. With regard to Made in China.. I agree .. I had a kit made for racing from a notable company based in Brooklyn... they did the bait and switch on me.. and when all is said and done.. I got my kit.. expensive. made in china and bad workmanship.. ( afterwhich.. I ventured on to Alibaba where at times I obtain or sell folkloric instruments) A Company who makes Cycling kits told me their cost to me would be 1/8 of what the Big C was charging me..amazing I said.. wow..ouch!! was my reaction. The same can be said to most outsourcing on Carbon bikes, and now it seems Wool Vintage style clothing..what a shame.. I think its time we take a stand and support Handmade articles / Companies with merit and quality not based in a country who could care less about Velo minded gents like ourselves.. who are passionate about cycles, cycling ..its History and are an integral part of adding to its importance in the human experience ... I digress... however the inclination on my part would be to investigate and seek out smaller based companies in the US or Italy or France for that matter who could use the business in making " Real Quality " wool based on tradition.. so Ill retrace my contacts in Italia when I lived there 5 years back.. now on a mission.. Ill report back to all on CR my findings.. "..
