I'm sure I am jumping into the middle of a discussion here, but I just want to point out that fixed wheel bicycles have been around a lot longer than the current fad, and many of us have some that have always been fixed wheel.? Take a look at this wonderful 1946 Merlin L'Internationale (no relation to the titanium bike guys,?and also pre-Bob Jackson!)? these bikes will never go out of style.?

But I agree, bastardizing?nice road frames?with small front wheels, funny narrow riser bars, 3" tall colored rims, BMX pedals, etc., well that just takes the magic out of them.?
<Hopefully I'm not drifting off-topic here, but while I like to see a vintage bike ridden and cared for, the current trend of taking quality lugged steel-framed road bikes and turning them into "fixies" disturbs me.? Fixed-gear/flip-flop hub bikes?may be suitable for short rides on tracks or in highly urbanized environments, but the whole purpose of multi-geared bicycles is to provide efficient cycling at variable speeds over a variety of terrains.? I'm afraid once the current "fixie fad" fades, "modified" (read BUTCHERED) classic steel frames will be consigned to the scrap heap. ? HELP SAVE VINTAGE STEEL FROM THE FRIVILOUS FIXIE FAD!? STEEL IS REAL!>
cheers
