Subject: Re: [CR] Simplex Freewheel Cogs (info sought)

Hi Charlie,

Thanks for responding. I haven't been able to get any "shed time" till now. My vernier's say it's 56.something so it might be the same. I am uncertain whether it's capable of having two cogs spin on the back threaded portion (to make it a 5 speed) or just the one (to make a 4 seed) and pulling freewheels apart is very new to me.

From what I can tell it appears that I have a similar freewheel to that on the Classic Rendezvous website pictured below ... http://www.classicrendezvous.com/France/parts/Simplex/Simplex_4x_fw.htm

Here's a pic of my Simplex freewheel from the side (the widget holding it up doesn't belong to the freewheel) http://www.cyclebucket.com/images/simplexcog.jpg

Is measuring pitch just a matter of measuring each thread rise against a ruler ... say 1 thread per mm like yours? It appears that I have the same thread and there is about 7mm of thread. Either the cog needed is wide with a butt or space on one end or it's meant for two thinner cogs (to make a 5 speed).

I have a Regina extra 5 speed to compare to. The cogs are the same thickness, have the same slotted heads on the teeth, and the spacing between cogs is the same but the Simplex body appears just slightly narrower overall. Indeed the cogs look very similar

And Charlie, to clarify do you have any loose cogs available? Or if anyone on the list has any larger (last position) Regina loose cogs in good condition i'd be keen for one or two to trial fit and see if that works. This may make sense as I'd heard or read somewhere that Simplex "Made in Italy" might have been made by Regina (under contract). It might be that easy ;)

The 3 cogs already fitted are 14/15/17 so I guess I 19 or 20 tooth large position cog suit or 19 and 21 if it's possible to fit 2 cogs in the last position.

thanks

ciao, ben
