Dear Tom et al:

Some additional Data:  A Phil 120mm 36 hole hub is 160 US dollars.  A 40 dollar upcharge for a custom spoke count gets you a new hub that is arguably KOF for $200.  Not unreasonable when a 1st Gen super record rear goes for twice that, more than a modern Shimano 105 hub but in the ball park with Dura Ace.

However the demand for 40 hole rims is perhaps due to the hubs being more durable than the rims, rims being cut out and many of us are sitting on 40 hole hubs without suitable hoops for them.  I think there's a market.  I follow this old trend by having a couple of wheel sets built 32 front and either 36 or 40 hole rear.  The extra beef in the rear wheel is comforting.

Good morning all.

I have been following the thread about 40 hole rims, and as always I am impressed with this groups enthusiasm for our subject.  However, we should take a moment to consider the sources of 40 hole hubs.  The only manufactures of 40 hole hubs in the spacing we would need are Phil Wood and White Industries, and while both of these companies make excellent hubs, they are expensive and off topic.

Before asking Jan Heine or Velo Orange to invest the considerable amounts of time and money it takes to bring a new product to market, we need to be shour that we have considered all the possibilities and problems, and are committed to buying these rims.  Remember that these are small companies with limited recourses, and can't have expensive unsold stock gathering dust in the back rooms.

Nice Sunday for a ride.
