Subject: [CR] Phil Wood Hubs ... past & present

The early Phil hubs had a different axle arrangement than do the current issue, and they are not interchangeable. Within the early type phil hubs there were several distinct variations. The earliest of these had a chromed barrel that was flared at the ends. On these hubs, the drive side flange was held on with an interference fit. These had a history of failure and were replaced in 1975-76 with the classic model, which had a threaded drive side flange and a brushed stainless steel barrel.

The current model has a 1 piece aluminum shell, and the axle has threaded endcaps that can be removed with a 5mm allen wrench.
