Jack,

We restored a 1984 Schwinn Voyageur SP (Panasonic-made of Columbus tubing) that had a 36-40h wheelset. It was originally equipped with Wolber/Super Champion Modele 58 27" rims.

The front rim was intact. Unfortunately, the rear had been replaced with a Sun (with their oddball drilling that puts the valve hole between crossed spokes when swapping a rim.) We were lucky to find an exact match in 40h for the front from a local shop. (He might have one or two more if anyone's ISO one. Let me know and I'll ask what he has.)

My early-80's Bridgestone Altair LDT came with 40/36 (endearing); whereas same vintage Trek 720 is 36/36. I don't know if the Miyata 1000 was 40/36, unlike Schwinn Voyager someone mentioned. It'd be interesting what mass-produced 70/80's tourers came 40/36? Seems if someone is serious about designing a "true" tourer, 40/36 would be de rigeur...no?
