Steve,

The original SR derailleurs that had the same design as the NRs had a 26T rear sprocket capacity but I've seen them working with up to a 30T rear sprocket depending on the dropouts, chainstay length and chain ring size.

The newer model SR 4001 derailleurs also listed as a 0102018 supposedly came out in 1980 but was listed in a 1977 Campy supplement. They had a redesigned cage and were rated at 28T maximum sprocket.

I too have old legs and earlier this year I was putting together a bike with one of these derailleurs. I tried to use a Campy Victory crankset with 50-35 chainrings with a 13-28 freewheel.

The derailleur didn't have enough chain wrap to work with the 35T chainring and I had to go all the way up to a 38T ring to get it to work properly.
