Subject: [CR] 3Rensho Saddle Question NOW Comfortable Saddles

I totally agree. Comfort outweighs appearance when it comes to saddles, and women seem to be especially particular about saddles, perhaps because only relatively few traditional saddles were designed for women.

I've been posting a lot about Paramounts lately because I'be been rebuilding my wife's all chrome 1970 touring Paramount. Completed it yesterday, except for mudguards, racks and bags, and will post photos soon. It's nearly all original, even down to retaining the original Campy Gran Trashmo RD. EXCEPT the original Brooks Pro was replaced with an Avocet Women's Touring II. She's been riding that model since it first came out in the 80's and has never found anything else as comfortable.

The other non-original detail is the MKS Stream pedals. She likes to ride without toeclips, and the Stream rattrap "con denti" design grips a touring shoe well. The original Campy steel roads with strap loop were overhauled and saved for a future project.

\r?\n> The answer to Matthew Bowne's search

\r?\n> may be implicit in his message (below). Susan and I rode

\r?\n> many thousands of tandem miles from the late 60s through the

\r?\n> early 90s. We helped organize two Eastern Tandem Rallies,

\r?\n> and attended many others, so we saw hundreds or thousands of

\r?\n> tandems In The Day. I assure you that saddles were

\r?\n> discussed, evaluated, and argued about over many a beer

\r?\n> through many a night. But, the focus was always on the

\r?\n> search for a saddle that Beloved Stoker would find

\r?\n> acceptable, so she would continue enjoying the ride.

\r?\n> Any saddle, whatever. Wide, narrow, slotted, pink, we didn't

\r?\n> care.  It never crossed my mind that the tandem should

\r?\n> have matching or even color-coordinated saddles. Matching

\r?\n> jerseys and shorts, matching handlebar tape, all "de

\r?\n> rigeur." But saddles were too important. Besides, when

\r?\n> you're riding, you can't see the saddle. :-)

\r?\n>

\r?\n> So, if matching looks matter, get an extra stoker seatpost

\r?\n> and saddle to match what you like up front. Use the matching

\r?\n> set for when the bike's on display, and ride with what

\r?\n> works. Changing saddle and post together shouldn't take more

\r?\n> than a minute, eh?

\r?\n>

\r?\n> Tandeming had two rules:

\r?\n> 1) The stoker is always right.

\r?\n> 2) See rule #1.

\r?\n> First off, thanks to all who responded to my post regarding

\r?\n> the appropriate saddle for a '82 3Rensho build.  I am

\r?\n> happy to hear that most were sold as framesets and were

\r?\n> typically found outfitted with any one of a number of

\r?\n> fashionable saddles of the era.

\r?\n> What I failed to mention is, the bike is actually a tandem

\r?\n> and I will be looking for a pair of saddles.  Depending

\r?\n> on what comes up, I have a number of options...

\r?\n> But just in case some of you are looking to clear some room

\r?\n> in the parts bins, I am looking for some combination of the

\r?\n> following:

\r?\n>

\r?\n> - BLUE Turbo in good/new condition .  Smooth leather.

\r?\n> (2 of 'em)

\r?\n> - Avocet "Racing" saddle.  Black smooth leather.

\r?\n> Good/new condition (for me)

\r?\n> - Avocet "Touring" saddle.  Black smooth

\r?\n> leather.  Good/new condition (for my

\r?\n> stoker/girlfriend)

\r?\n> - Cinelli saddle in blue suede

\r?\n>

\r?\n> And while I am asking, it couldn't hurt to see if anyone

\r?\n> has a perforated Assos saddle kicking around...

\r?\n> I could use a pair of Campy road quill pedals (black alloy

\r?\n> cages) too, since we are on the subject.  Please

\r?\n> contact me if you have any of this stuff available for

\r?\n> sale!
