Names like Road-Path, Bob Reid, Mick Butler ohhh the nostalgia!. I personally like Road -Path and will continue to use this term. It trips off the tongue better than Road-Track. Up here in the Scottish Highlands these old bikes are still used at some of the Highland Games for the grass racing or 'Cycling' as it is advertised. There may be Caber Tossing, Hill Racing, High Jump, Athletics, Highland Dancing, Piping and Cycling. There is cycling at Strathpeffer and Drumnadrochit games for sure. I have seen almost exclusively elderly steel framed track ended Road/Path bikes being used. I once nearly tripped over a set of wheels lying in the grass with red anodised Airlite large flange hubs (faded to pink) . I have on loan a 1935 Claud Butler Path Racer ridden to success in many games by Angus ''Angie'' McDonald. It has had the front dropouts reinforced at Clauds sometimes in the early 1950's judging by the respray, rechrome and new headbadge. It is fitted with Chater Lea Chainset and pedals. The wheels are wood sprints on pre war rivetted flange Airlites with a knobbly tub on the back. I think its a Wolber Cross. I have photos which I will upload to flickr. I have a 1956 Flying Scot Road Path which came out of a bike shop in Dingwall. This was also used on the grass and has the lower headrace cup brazed into the headtube. I am guessing this is a bodge but who knows?
