... the brake cables. The rear brake cable would be on the right side of the handlebar stem in that right/rear configuration. I think the cable housing was moved to the left side of the stem to "improve" the photo and not obstruct the view of the stem. Also the rear brake cable is higher than the front brake cable, and it is common practice to set them up the same height.
