[CR] Tubular tyre diameter

(Example: Framebuilding)

Hi,

I am currently running old style Continental Giro 22mm dia tyres on Fiamme rims with the tub being help in place using only Velox double sided sticky tape. Though currently this arrangement appears to be functioning just fine I have noticed that a slight separation is taking place between the tub and tape close to the edge of the rim. In the fullness of time this "sticky" separation is bound to become permanent since any exposed sticky tape will become contaminated with road dirt and vegetative debris.

Just how sensitive is a tubular rim to tubular tyre nominal diameter.

Should I be using a larger nominal diameter tyre to help reduce the possibility of gaps opening up in the first place or should I pump the tubular up to maximum pressure whilst in winter storage to effectively increase its diameter and maybe also thereby help reduce the propensity for edge tape / rim separation ?

How long does it take for a tubular tyre to stretch and settle to it's effective working diameter.

Regards

Ken Hume
