Subject: [CR] Long axles in Campy hubs

Can't remember who posted the inquiry about using a Campy rear hub with a 135 (or longer) rear axle. Wheels manufacturing made chrome-moly axles for these hubs and you may have been able to get a 135. However you may find that you'll break axles.

The drive side bearing is pretty close to the center of the axle with a long axle setup, and that puts a much larger load on the axle at the cone. The industry move to wider rear axles (to accomdate 7, then 8, 9, 10, and up to 11 cogs) gave rise to the OT cassette hubs which have at least one extra bearing on the outside, the better to support the load from the cassette (nee freewheel).

With a clever spacer configuration you may be able to come up with a dishless configuration, which could be interesting. If you need help with this, I have a large selection of axle spacers and might be able to help out, contact me off list.

Not really a recommended setup, but your mileage may vary. I'd use a Phil hub.
