I support my LBS as much as I can, that means buying the majority of cables, tape, spokes etc. from them as well as using them for some repairs. I do most of my own work with the exception of things like facing dropouts and other frame specific work. I do rely on them when I'm faced with a particularly difficult problem, like a fixed cup that hadn't been removed in 30 years. I don't have a VAR BB tool, but my LBS does. I've seen all too many good shops go under, I may not be dropping 'big bucks' on bikes or components but I try to do whatever I can.
