I love this question and the answers.

Here is my twist. I use WD-40 in my ultrasonic cleaner. No explosions yet. I assume it works better than straight water and detergent, but I would not bet a bike part on that.

Best thing I learned from the other answers: Dishwasher; broken marriage; clean bike parts. This will work for me, as I do the dishes.

Never too old to learn.
