Hi Brian,

So I better hurry up and buy my last batch of paint for my 64SS? I knew it would happen, but when?? I have a few vintage bike projects and better get all the paint now? I have DAU clear (I am a PPG fan), and DP40, 48 and 90. I guess we are all going to change or be in trouble.

Anthony,

Our transition to water based paint begins here in CA in Jan. 08, 2010, according to my paint supplier. Apparently we will still be able to use petro based primer (thank God for that!) and petro based clear coats. Water based color coats have been around for a while, but I haven't used any; being a big fan of Imron, and all that. We'll see what happens.

Hi George,
H2O Based paints are being used right now. I think what Brian Baylis may have meant was that the Gestapo has past a law that I think by 2012 all the auto/bike painting industry is to convert to H2O base from the petroleum base. The European auto industry has been using H2O based paint for a few years now. I have painted some with it and it's as good as the petro stuff. for the painted he needs a lot more equipment and a dedicated gun for each stage of paint. At this point most of the clear coats are still petro based so even if you use H2O as a base coat you most likely will need to use a petro based clear coat. Sherwin-Williams makes a H2O system but It's really odor some, much worse than petro stuff, as per my supplier,
Auto Air is a company that makes the H2O baesed stuff I've used, it worked great Anthony Mezzatesta Custom Cycles Cranberry Twp. PA. 16066 http://www.mezzatestacustomcycles.com

In a recent posting on the restoration issue, Mr. Baylis said that "water based color paint is right around the corner here in Cal." or something like that. What does that mean? Are oil based paints to be outlawed like DDT? How will water based paint differ from paints currently used to refinish bikes/cars like Imron? Should I send off my bikes en mass for repaints now?
